How the count was made

Official teaching means material issued, adopted, commissioned, or presented by the denomination or national church body as its explanation of belief, theology, or worship. Confessions, catechisms, doctrinal standards, adopted position papers, denominational curricula, and official explanatory teaching pages qualify.

Prayer books, service orders, rites, rubrics, ceremonial directions, worship-planning material, and local or subordinate-church practice do not determine the count. A positive finding requires an explicit connection between worship, adoration, reverence, or homage and bowing, kneeling, prostration, genuflection, bodily inclination, falling before, or an equivalent gesture.

The positive findings are Catholic and Orthodox 7/8, Lutheran 3/10, Pentecostal and Charismatic 3/12, and Restorationist, Adventist, and other bodies 4/12.
